Osceola shouldn't be called chief
Indeed, McHugh said, a tribal leader brought up the topic in summer 2005. That's when the NCAA requested 30 universities quit using Native American nicknames and symbols for their sports teams. FSU President T.K. Wetherell and the school's board of trustees announced it would fight the edict. Ultimately, FSU was allowed to keep its nickname, after the Seminole tribe issued a proclamation supporting FSU's use of "Seminoles."And the real Osceola was not even a micco. Osceola (1804-1838) was a warrior who led a small band of renegades whose attack on a U.S. Indian agent outside an Army fort in Ocala precipitated the Second Seminole War in 1835. Two years later, Osceola was captured under a white flag of truce — then imprisoned despite a national outcry over the deceitful tactics. After three months in prison, he died of malaria. Granted, the term is part of a nationwide trend in which "nation" is attached to any group of sports fans: "Gator nation," "Red Sox nation," even ESPN SportsNation. But it has particular significance to Seminole Indians as it is the official name of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, which occasionally has been at odds politically with the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

(S.C.) Ron Morris , detailing the former American Indian Movement leader’s frustration with the way schools like Florida State depict his people, says he “used to be angered” by things like the Tomahawk Chop and the FSU mascot’s pregame ritual of throwing a spear into the ground while on horseback. But to hear Means tell it, he doesn’t sound too pleased to this day.
The “Seminoles” nickname, he’s okay with. The rituals? Not so much:
One would think that last comment would encounter some arguments from members of other minority groups. I, in my whiteness, will refrain from such…and also say that yes, there’s a lot of American Indian stereotyping still going on in sports logos/mascots – the fact that there’s still a team called the “Redskins” is actually pretty amazing; the fact that Chief Wahoo still exists in any form, even more so.
