History lesson part of South Shore chamber meeting

The June meeting of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce was held recently at the Crapaud Community Hall.

President Marion Miller welcomed those attending. The minutes of the last meeting were reviewed and approved. Updates were given on the paving on Route 13 and the painting of the lines at an intersection.

As there will not be meetings in July or August, members were reminded that the next meeting, to be held in September, will be a political forum.

Elmer MacDonald, president of the Crapaud Exhibition Association, spoke about plans for the exhibition this year, including a potato-peeling contest which will only be held in Crapaud, horse shoe pitching, a horse show and many other events.

The new multi-purpose building on the grounds is to be named the John H. Walker building in honour of the late John H. Walker, who was a long time member of the Crapaud Exhibition Association.

MacDonald noted that the horses to be used for the royal visit and the RCMP musical ride will be stabled in the facility on the grounds in Crapaud.

Historian Betty Howatt was the guest speaker for the chamber meeting and gave a brief history on the life of Capt. Samuel Holland, who was a surveyor.

As the man responsible for mapping the Island, he laid out its lots and parishes between the years 1764 and 1766.

She also spoke about his royal connection.

Holland died in 1801 and was buried in Quebec City. During his life, he completed maps along the St. Lawrence River, as well as in P.E.I., the Magdelene Islands, Cape Breton and south along the Atlantic coast.

He began his P.E.I. mapping at Fort Amherst (also known as Holland Cove) in 1764, completing it two years later.

His payment was to be awarded Lot 28 (Tryon area) during the 1767 lottery. The lot was settled by a few farmers and disbanded soldiers, Holland went on to other commissions, administrating the lot as an absentee landlord. By 1798, there were 136 residents on the lot.

At the beginning of the American War of Independence in 1783, Holland was sent to Quebec where he remained until his death. His wife, Marie Josette (Rolette) Holland, returned to the Island and is buried at the Tryon Peoples cemetery

Howatt spoke of the royal connection through Prince Edward who Holland was acquainted with, and of Prince Edwards’s association with Julie St. Laurent for over 27 years. However, he was not allowed to marry her.
