Last weekend, I ordered some yarn from Herrschners . I ran across Regia sock yarn on sale for just $2.97 a skein in one of their catalogs, and I’ve been wanting to try my hand at crocheting another pair of socks, but this time, I wanted to actually use sock yarn rather than light worsted yarn. While on their site and ordering my yarn, I ran across another deal that I decided to take advantage of, which was Moda Dea Cheerio on sale for just 99 cents a skein. I couldn’t resist, so I tossed some of that into my cart, too. Then I looked at their Bernat Cool Crochet–a yarn I’ve been wanting to try–and it was on sale as well, although a little more expensive than the other two, so I added a few skeins to my cart. When I went to check out, I noticed that my shipping amount had gone to zero, and I thought, “cool, free shipping with a fifty dollar purchase!” That always works for me, because I’d much rather make up the shipping with yarn than to pay for the actual shipping itself. So, I paid for my order, and all was good in my yarny world.

The next day, I received a confirmation email stating that my order had gone through successfully. Wonderful! But then when I went to check the status of my order online, one of the sock yarn totals equaled zero, which was a red flag for me. To me, that says the item wasn’t in stock and I wasn’t going to get it, even though it showed to be available when I ordered it. In this case, I thought that way because I’ve read numerous complaints of this happening to other people. Not only that, but since it equaled zero, my shipping charge had returned, and I was going to pay almost the same price without the yarn as I was before my shipping was zero and the yarn was part of the order. This bothered me, so I picked up the phone and made a call to Customer Service.

I talked to a very pleasant representative who was doing all she could to figure out why (1) my sock yarn was showing up as zero, especially since it showed to be in stock, and (2) the system gave me free shipping in the first place, because it really wasn’t supposed to. She asked if she could call me back after the supervisor looked into the two problems. Within an hour, I received the call. They couldn’t figure out the whole shipping thing and why it didn’t charge me for shipping at first or even why the yarn price was showing up zero, but they guaranteed me that my yarn would be in the box, and to make up for the problems, they weren’t going to charge me for the yarn, and they were going to refund me the amount difference between what the yarn cost and what shipping was costing me. So basically, I wasn’t going to pay for shipping or I was getting free yarn, just a matter of how a person wants to look at it. I was happy. I was still getting my yarn and I was still paying the price the system had calculated.
