SeaWorld's Turtle Reef
SeaWorld has a variety of reef fish: razor surgeonfish, French grunt, butterflyfish, spotted hawkfish and whitetip soliderfish. All in all there’s nearly two thousands tropical fish cruising through this aquarium, which is the largest habitat dedicated to sea turtles in the world. This attraction also features interactive, educational activities that allow our guests to learn about sea turtles: A touch-screen map highlights our rescue efforts; a motioned-controlled gaming wall pits people against others as they us controllers and become navigating turtles on a daunting sea-to-shore journey though obstacles the species faces in the wild like trash, sharks and making sure they eat the right foods. And we have a spinning gondola-raft boat ride that takes guest on a rescue mission of their own. They have rescue teams on call 365 days a year at all the three of our SeaWorld parks. We’ve rescued more than 1,500 injured or ill sea turtles the past three decades, including a record number last year. Most of the turtles we treat suffer from cold stress, injuries, ingestion of trash, boat strikes, oil contaminates and even bullet wounds. We’re happy to say that recently, we returned our 1,000th rescued sea turtle to the wild. And of course, when their injuries or illness prove to debilitating to survive in the wild we give them a permanent home here. The animal experts at SeaWorld are always eager to share our story of conservation and animal care, especially when we have a new attraction that supports our mission. But why settle for a regular media interview when you can conduct one from the depths of a 300,000 gallon aquarium?
That’s what SeaWorld San Diego aquarists Mike Price and Christa Miller did when the park hosted
a series of underwater media interviews this past Wednesday.
From Boston to Baltimore – Las Vegas to LA - Sacramento to Salt Lake City – our submerged spokespeople shared information about the park’s new Turtle Reef attraction , the recent release of SeaWorld Pictures first film, “Turtle: The Incredible Journey” , and also discussed why sea turtles are in peril, what SeaWorld is doing, and what we can all do to help. Green and hawksbill sea turtles – some as big as 300 pounds - and thousands of tropical fish cruised by the watery studio.
All totaled, the two shared this unique story with 15 television programs, showcasing SeaWorld San Diego to millions of viewers.
