Player movement shows MLS moving toward big-league play
On Friday, the Los Angeles Galaxy will unveil Irish national team captain and legendary English Premier League striker Robbie Keane as its newest big-name player. The details of the blockbuster acquisition haven’t been released, but reports have pegged the transfer fee and Keane’s wages at around $9 million.
Keane was the highlight of a summer transfer window that included the debut of designated players including ascendant U.S. national team midfielder Freddy Adu (Philadelphia Union) and German World Cup veteran Torsten Frings (Toronto FC).
Since the Colorado Rapids lifted the 2010 MLS Cup, the league has signed 11 salary cap-exempt designated players and more than 80 professionals with experience in foreign leagues.
MLS no longer is a league of penny pinchers, and the increased commitment to spending and quality is bearing fruit.
MLS clubs are 9-1-0 in the 2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League, and on Wednesday FC Dallas became the first senior American team to defeat a Mexican opponent south of the border.
“It’s our investors' goal to be among the best leagues in the world. They’re not in this to be a second-tier league,” MLS executive vice president Todd Durbin told Sporting News.
"We’re operating now with a clear vision in mind," said Nelson Rodriguez, the league’s other executive vice president, "and the vision that’s been articulated by our board is that by 2022, soccer is to be a preeminent sport in North America and MLS is to be among the best leagues in the world. And we’re working backward from that vision.”
Nine years ago, MLS was clinging to survival. Two Florida teams had been contracted, reducing the league to 10 members. There was little visibility or momentum.
What changed? According to Durbin, it was legitimacy, infrastructure and diversity. He said soccer “really struggled for credibility” in the league’s early days. It’s now a sport NBC has paid to broadcast on network television. Soccer-specific stadiums have blossomed across the U.S. and Canada, and an ownership group once dominated by Phil Anschutz and Lamar Hunt now comprises 17 individual investor groups.
“Yeah, it’s a business for many and for an increasing many, it’s also a passion,” Rodriguez said. "There’s greater love for the game and the sport in the boardroom. They want to win."
What has resulted is an exponential increase in spending on players.
While many focus on the $2.67 million “salary budget” governing each team, there are so many loopholes and cap-exempt players—from D.P. veterans to Generation adidas youngsters—that the number’s publication actually does the league a disservice.

Still Stuck on “Stimulus”: Despite Job Losses, POTUS Wants More ...
Yes but most of the jobs lost (over 600,000) were government and public sector jobs cut by Republican Governors this year. Just like most of the jobs created in Texas (115,000) were govt jobs. This graph won't fool most Americans and will come back to bite you when the Democrats show how many of these jobs were cut by Republicans. And how many more jobs will be cut because of reduced spending. I think it would better serve your interest to stick to the issue 1. Get a 5 year corporate rate tax cut from 35% to 20% to get American companies back here. 2. A balanced budget amendment 3. Another one time low tax allowing American companies to bring back $1.2 TRILLION from over seas back to America. 4. Lower FCA tax for employers also down to 4.5% Best of luck, hope you are enjoying your vacation Great graph....it should not come as a surprise to anyone. Obama has been deceiving, dodging, and telling lies since the start of his campaign. Remember how he mis-stated (lied) about the contents of Obmacare. He has no leadership, no esxperience, or no plans for anything other than total disruption of businesses and job creators, as well as keeping as many people as possible on government assistance which he believes will garner votes. The kind of stimulas voters are looking for is for Congress to stop spending tax dollars on programs that don't work, and start letting the private sector get back to work. Defund useless programs and departments, deregulate industry and shrink every department by 15% before the 2012 election. It doesn't matter that Barry oBama will veto it. We want to see Congress take the right steps otherwise the TEA Party is going to start replacing you with someone who will listen. thanks.
