Toughen pollution standards

A study out this week detailing the pollution levels from coal- and oil-fired power plants underscores the need to adopt tighter standards on emissions such as mercury and other toxics.

The study, which used publically available data from the federal Environmental Protection Agency's Toxics Release Inventory, and released by the natural Resources Defense Council and Physicians for Social responsibility, placed Maryland among the worst states with toxic pollution from power plants.

Lynn Ringenberg, of Physicians for Social Responsibility, said in a press release announcing the study results that, "Coal pollution is killing Americans. It is America's biggest source of toxic air pollution. Air toxics from coal-fired power plants cause cancer, birth defects, and respiratory illness. Just one of those air toxics, mercury, damages the developing brains of fetuses, infants, and small children. It robs our children of healthy neurological development and native intelligence."

Nearly half of all the toxic air pollution reported from industrial sources in the United States comes from coal- and oil-fired power plants, the study found.

Tighter standards proposed by the EPA, the federal agency says, would save as many as 17,000 lives every year by 2015 and prevent up to 120,000 cases of childhood asthma symptoms.

Some members of Congress are trying to block the tougher standards. Ultimately, it comes down to a tradeoff in how much we want to protect our health and the health of our children verses how much pollution we want to allow these plants to dump into the air every day. Alternatively, it comes down how much of a break we want to give the polluters in avoiding the cost of upgrading their facilities and, instead, taking on those costs ourselves in the form of more doctor bills and health care costs to combat the health problems associated with constant exposure to pollution.

Maryland ranked fifth worst on the groups' "Toxic 20" list. Residents have a choice now to lobby their congressional representatives to support the regulations, or let them fall to the wayside and continue to spend more on doctor bills associated with breathing polluted air.
