AURORA — West Aurora High School sophomore football players Jakilo Lee and Devontae Ward will have a lot less mess to worry about when they hit the field this fall.

A $1.3 million makeover of the Blackhawks’ stadium is under way — and the field was starting to look green again Thursday as workers began replacing the grass with the new all-weather Field Turf.

Goodbye grass stains and mud-caked cleats, the teens said gleefully as they watched the first strips of green turf fall into place. “It’s a lot better than grass,” Lee said.

Ward agreed. The grip is better, the field is more versatile, and the look is just “raw,” he said.

For the School District, less maintenance, watering and upkeep will be required. The more-durable surface also can be used in the rain and snow without threat of deterioration.

“They should make the whole world turf,” Ward suggested with a smile.

But that would be quite expensive.

Because of the high cost of turfing the field, West Aurora reached out to residents for support. Donations made to the Community Field of Dreams Fund continue to roll in.

According to the district, more than $900,000 in contributions have been received so far for the installation of the turf. This includes an anonymous donation of $400,000, which kick-started the project. Aurora University also chipped in with a donation of $250,000 in exchange for the use of the field for its lacrosse team.

It was this news that put grins on the faces of West High freshmen Kyler Robinson and Mylesha Coleman.

“I’m looking forward to seeing these college boys play up here,” Coleman said.

The project also has received more than 100 donations, along with a $25,000 grant from the U.S. Soccer foundation. Once the field is completed, the district expects significantly lower maintenance costs and a new revenue source from renting the field.

The field’s versatility also will be great for hosting band practices, all athletic team practices, games, and community youth sports programs, and for relieving overcrowded gym classes.
