Gallegos to be honored for work in education

Ruben Gallegos will be honored Saturday by the Hispanic Sports Foundation for Education Inc. at its fifth annual National Hispanic Heritage Hall of Honor Dinner and Awards Banquet.

The annual event, to be held in San Antonio at the University of Incarnate Word, is in support of the foundation’s scholarship fund.

The HSFE identifies and gives recognition to outstanding Hispanics citizens for lifetime achievements in the categories of education , athletics, public service, military service, business, and arts and entertainment.

Gallegos will be recognized for his contributions to education.

His name is well-known in Brownsville because a local elementary school bears his name. The school website notes that he was the oldest child in a family of migrant workers and worked during his early years in agricultural fields in Texas, Colorado and California. After graduating from Brownsville High School, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree at Pan American University and a master’s and doctorate from East Texas University in Commerce.

After a distinguished career in the Brownsville Independent School District and other Texas districts, he spent time teaching at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College, according to the Gallegos Elementary School website. More recently he has been the executive director of International Educational Services in Los Fresnos, an organization that helps undocumented children who arrive in the United States.

The honor he will receive Saturday is from an organization that works to provide scholarships to Hispanic students.

"The money raised through our Hall of Honor Dinner is to provide assistance to deserving students and enable them to attend college," said Joe Cortez, HSFE president. "Over the last year, our organization has awarded more than $25,000 in scholarship grants to over 20 students. This is a significant accomplishment and I am confident, with help from the community, we can succeed in generating even more aid for commendable San Antonio students."

The Hispanic Sports Foundation for Education Inc. is a nonprofit community service oriented organization established in 2006. The primary focal point of the organization’s belief statement is to promote the value and importance of education by providing financial assistance to deserving high school students.
