A high school teacher who was placed on administrative probation after he admitted six years ago that he engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with a student and a co-worker has been named Reynolds High School assistant principal.
John Dixon's promotion was recommended by Reynolds School District Superintendent Joyce Henstrand and approved by the school board June 8.
Henstrand said she researched Dixon's past, including a criminal background check and a review of documents related to his probation, before approving his promotion.
"I looked at all the evidence and felt it was an appointment I could support and endorse," she said.
Dixon has been the activities director at Reynolds High for two years. He could not be reached for comment.
He applied for the assistant principal job along with about 70 others, Henstrand said. The process included interviews with Henstrand and other school administrators. She also talked to supervisors Dixon has worked with in the district.
She said her research indicated Dixon had been an "exemplary employee" in recent years.
Dixon, 38, was given a public reprimand and placed on two-year probation in 2005 for inappropriate conduct with a student and a counselor at Reynolds High.
The Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission declared Dixon had engaged in a gross neglect of duty in each case.
From October 2001 to March 2004, Dixon served as a physical education teacher with the school district.
In October 2001, he lifted a counselor off the floor and hugged her "for an inappropriate length of time" in front of students at the Reynolds High gym, according to the commission.
In September 2003, the commission said, he pulled up a student's shorts, exposing her buttocks to members of the boys basketball team. The commission also said he commented on the color of the girl's underwear.
In addition to the reprimand and the probation, Dixon was required to be evaluated by a mental health professional.
Susan Cooper, the president of the Reynolds High booster club, said she doesn't know the specifics of the two incidents, but she said they were both "a long time ago."
Cooper, whose daughter has taken a leadership class from Dixon, described him as a dynamic teacher with a unique way of engaging his students.
"I believe in who he is," she said, "and what he's doing for the kids.
