The Weekend: Once again, the heat is on
Scene EditorWell, the heat has begun to be a bit difficult lately. We’re used to this, seeing as we’re in Texas, but, for some reason, the heat has really felt intense.
We were playing a computer game, “Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove,” where the setting was full of cold and snow and we realized it made us feel a bit cooler.
So, now we have struck on the idea of staying cooler through imagination.
The plan is to just read books about winter: Jack London’s Call of the Wild is full of snow, too.
One doesn’t have to limit it to books, either. There are always movies like “White Christmas” or “Fargo,” or documentaries about Greenland, the polar ice caps, Alaska and Iceland.
Admittedly, these activities won’t keep you cool for the whole day but they could work for a couple of comfortable blessed hours.

Friday, June 15
PAWS Shelter and Humane Society (500 FM 150 East, Kyle) will hold an open house for their Adopt-a-thon weekend from 4-6 p.m. There will be refreshments and a plethora of adorable pets.
Joel Hoffman is a local musical treasure. It’s always a pleasure to hear his band. You can do that at the Triple Crown (206 North Edward Gary Street) tonight at 6 p.m.
It may be hot outside, but it’s no hotter than that bingo basket turning at the Wimberley VFW (Veterans Park on Jacobs Well Road) every Friday night. The early bird game starts at 7:15 p.m. There are snacks and cool drinks for sale offered by the fine women of the Ladies Auxiliary, too.
Buda’s Toons and Tunes summer program features the movie “The Last Airbender” at 9 p.m. tonight at City Park on Main Street. If you are confused about the story, ask your kids about it. They’ve probably seen the cartoon version, “Avatar: The Last Airbender”, on Nickelodeon. Bring a blanket, some snacks and look at that beautiful moon, too. Admission is free. Concessions will be available.
The talented and equally lovely Kasey Chambers will be at the Texas Music Theater (120 East San Antonio Street) tonight. Chambers is an Australian singer-songwriter with a slew of awards under her belt. Her new latest release, “Little Bird,” has garnered much critical acclaim. She’s well worth seeing. Warren Hood opens at 9 p.m. Tickets are $17.
