Oceanside artist honours fallen Olympic luger with painting

A painting dedicated to Nodar Kumaritashvili, the Georgian luger who died at the 2010 Winter Olympics, has been delivered to his parents by the Oceanside artist Monk.

The painting, Nodar's Spirit, was in fact created by "thousands and thousands" of people, Monk says, including many who lined up for an hour for the privilege at the Olympics O-Zone in Richmond, patients at BC Children's Hospital, people all over B.C. and Alberta, and many in his home village of Bakuriani. About seven feet high and four feet across, the painting has 50-70 layers of oil paint, an inch thick in some places, and thousands of messages and signatures on the back.

Monk was invited to be at the O-Zone on and off during the Olympics as an ambassador artist for Vancouver Island, welcoming people to help create a painting of Cathedral Grove.

The morning of Feb. 12, 2010, at 10: 48 a.m., she was preparing the canvas to take to the Olympics when a feeling of dread came over her, as if someone she knew had died.

Soon after, she heard on the radio of Nodar's accident that day during a training run. She decided to name the painting Nodar's Spirit and put his name on the back. He was to be represented by the most prominent tree in the painting, an actual ancient tree from Cathedral Grove, signifying, she says, the effect he will have "for many generations."

Olympic athletes heard of the painting project at the O-Zone and started to come by to paint, both to express their condolences and for good luck. Then the media caught wind of it and the line-ups began on the O-Zone's BC Street.

Organizers decided Monk should be there every day, and so she was, often until 9 p.m.

Mostly, she said, "people put a stroke where I told them to," so she could keep the line moving. But if you look closely at the painting of the old-growth forest, there are dozens of tiny, hidden icons, each with a story behind it: a person, a cross, a ladybug, a butterfly, even a teeny-weeny van carrying an Olympic torch.

Space on the right was saved for a tree to be completed by the people of Bakuriani.

Monk had planned to ship the painting there somehow but, "as I went through the Olympics and people were talking to me about how they felt, it came to me that I had to take it to the parents and express their condolences."

She left May 25 this year, with the painting flying separately via Lufthansa to the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, where it was picked up by her translator.
