Lisk thrives as Grizzlies' veteran

In most occupations, someone who is 28 years old is just starting on their career path.

In Frontier League baseball, being 28 makes Charlie Lisk the old-timer of the Gateway Grizzlies.

"If I do something, I hear ‘nice job, Grandpa,' but I'm one of the oldest guys in the league and I've been around a long time," said Lisk, who has played for Gateway since 2007 and is the league's all-time leader in home runs (99) and RBIs (346). "I've got a lot of games under my belt and I'm just trying to pass my knowledge along to these young guys and try to further their baseball careers."

In 2010, Lisk was the league's MVP, batting .303 with 21 homers and 88 RBIs. He's having another solid season this year, batting .321 with 10 homers and 53 RBIs.

"By all definitions, he's a veteran," said Grizzlies manager Phil Warren. "He's been here since my first year as manager, so we've had a long road together. He's an outstanding player and anchors the lineup and produces real well.

"In addition to catching, we use him as a DH and he's played some games at third base and first base for us. It's not a knock on Charlie, but catching is the most demanding position. Either they retire because their body wears out or they move on to other positions. Charlie plays those positions very well and with Landon (Hernandez) at catcher, we're able to do that. Some catchers are roadblocks on the bases, but he is not."

Warren feels that Lisk has matured as a player and a leader.

"He's calmed down more than anything," Warren said. "He's still Charlie and those of us that know him know what that means. He's more even-keeled and that's what stands out to me. That's why he's so consistent."

Lisk chuckles upon hearing Warren's assessment.

"I'm not even-keeled - I just don't show it as much," said Warren, who was a Frontier League all-star once again this season. "As a young guy, you don't control your emotions as well. As an older guy, you don't want the younger guys and the fans seeing you act like a jackass. When you can keep your emotions in check, this game is a lot easier."

Lisk played in the Chicago White Sox organization from 2001 to 2005. In addition to the Grizzlies, he has since spent time in the Florida Marlins and San Diego Padres organizations, had a stint with Windy City in the Frontier League and had brief stays in two other independent leagues.

"When I was younger, I had a lot of trouble with my eyes and I struck out a lot and had a low average and didn't walk very much," said Lisk, who lives in Wentzville, Mo. "I had my lasik surgery in ‘05 and had a couple years where I bounced around from team to team, then I found a home here. The strikeouts went down and the average and the walks went up and the power numbers went up just because I could see balls. It's made the biggest difference in the world to me.

If the condition of the eye is bad, it disturbs concentration on the action. when I feel bad with my eye condition, it is really hard to concentrate and act as the character. Of course eyesight is precious for everyone, but for actors, the eye is one of the biggest tools for acting. Also if I wear contact lens when I do martial arts or filming outside, the lens itself is disturbing and sometimes I've even lost one. Also the lenses cause lots of eye diseases. Finally I have decided to have a surgery and consulted with others who have already had the surgery, and they all recommended i Love Eye Center, so I visited there. Before I decided, I consulted with others who already experienced it and I became confident that it is safe. One of the big reasons that I could perform so well was because of the LASIK surgery.
