He walks the talk on sustainability

Matt Briggs of Lake Oswego isn't self-righteous. And hardly preachy.

His nine-year journey toward living green began small: planting an organic garden and using low VOC paint. It grew larger: installing 47 solar panels and other systems to help his home achieve net zero carbon emissions. And eventually gigantic: making a $2 million documentary film, "Deep Green," about how people the world over are reducing fossil fuel dependence.

"We are all downwind and downstream. We are all in the same boat, and unless we all change, we all go over the waterfall together," he likes to say. "We can fix this."

Not everyone will go to Briggs' lengths. But his story shows that small changes can lead to much larger ones.

He offers a free tour of his home, where he shows how he removed the exterior wall of his 1952 cinder-block house to make it eight times as insulated. How he added a 3,000-gallon rain catchment system to irrigate his yard. How he put in LED light bulbs. How he put local Indow Windows inserts on already double-pane windows to easily and relatively cheaply improve their energy efficiency. And mistakes too: How he blew cellulose insulation into his attic thinking he was "hot stuff" and later learned he had to seal all the leaks in his house, reinsulate everything and add an Energy Recovery Ventilator to keep the air fresh.

Briggs, 60, first plugged into climate change as he foraged mushrooms for his business, Cascade Trading Co., which sells wholesale all over the world (including Alice Waters' Chez Panisse in Berkeley for 30-some years).

Briggs, whose father had a doctorate from the University of Chicago and worked as Portland State University dean of students, grew up in a house of 4,000 books. Life was about playing baseball and coming to the dinner table smart. He started at Middlebury College, graduated from the University of Oregon and eventually studied Chinese medicine in Boston and San Francisco.

Briggs started digging into the science of climate change in 2005 as he prepared to make the film, reading more than 400 books and thousands of articles. The full picture scared him. "I didn't know it was this bad and how fast it was going to get worse and how many systems were crashing."

The top two things Briggs suggests?

1. Swap out all incandescent bulbs for LEDs.

2. Insulate. Insulate. Insulate.

He walks the talk on sustainability

Or does he think the money comes from the tooth fairy? How is it that you can't learn or get anything right. No matter how many times you and yours are corrected you never address the real skepticism. Mr. Fulks is NOT a "climate change denier".

Mother of All Boys: TOOTH FAIRY IDEAS…

~*Welcome*~... To my incredibly (In)Sane and chaotic life with all boys! There is never truly a dull moment, they keep me on my toes, bring me laughter, make me cry, and are the biggest blessing I could have asked for. I am extremely happily married to my partner, best friend, and best "daddy" our kids could ever ask for... blissfully established June 10th, 1998!!! When one of Lisa's baby teeth fell out here, the tooth fairy left her 50 cents.  Another tooth fell out when she was with her father in Las Vegas, and that tooth fairy left her $5.  When I told Elvis that 50 cents would be more in line, he laughed.  He knew I was not criticizing him; how would Elvis Presley know the going rate for a tooth?
