Tribe begins construction on water and wastewater treatment plant

STANDISH — The Saginaw-Chippewa Indian Tribe has begun constructing a new water and wastewater treatment plant to service the Saganing Eagles Landing Casino and surrounding reservation.

The plant will be located just southeast of the casino at the corner of Worth and Sturman Roads. The ground-breaking took place on Friday, July 15.

Saginaw-Chippewa Indian Tribe Public Relations Director Frank Cloutier said construction of the plant is expected to take around 16 months.

“We are currently working on the infrastructure and putting a plan in place to get residents service on this line as soon as we can,” he said.

Cloutier said the tribe will be getting water from the Saginaw-Midland Municipal Water Supply Corporation, a system that supplies water to Saginaw and Midland and communities along the Saginaw Bay.

“We will be tapping into their 78-inch hard line that travels alongside of the Lake State Railway,” he said.

Lake State Railway borders a side of the property where the Saganing Eagles Landing Casino sits.

“It will be easy access for us,” Cloutier said. “We will draw our water from (the line) into our plant, where we will treat the water.”

Cloutier said the plant will supply water to the casino, the Saganing Tribal Center, Eagle Valley Outfitters, and tribal residents within the reservation.

“As soon as we can we will run the line as far north as Sagatoo Road and west to M-13,” he said. “We want the line to be accessible to the Eagle Bay Marina.”

Since the casino opened Dec. 31 2007, Cloutier said it has been receiving around 11,000 gallons of water per day by truck from Omer. He said wastewater has been placed in a septic field.

Cloutier said that the Soaring Eagle Casino in Mount Pleasant has a water and wastewater treatment facility like the one that is being constructed in Standish.

“The system in Mount Pleasant is a cone-filter system and we will have a bio-treatable system here at Saganing,” he said. “The difference is we will have fresh water here, whereas in Mount Pleasant we have well water. In Mount Pleasant, we have to chlorinate it and fluoride it before redistributing it.”

Cloutier said the water and wastewater facility in Mount Pleasant distributes water throughout the entire Isabella Reservation.

He said the installation of a water and wastewater treatment facility on Worth Road is a “necessity” for the tribe.
