Danville Fun Wagon Brings People Together, Cools Them Off
Danville, VA - The Fun Wagon says it all in its name. The fire-hydrant-turned-fountain can be seen at different spots around Danville.
The city's Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Department sponsors it during the summer months.
The fun wagon sets up twice a day during the week beginning in June.
It provides lunch in the afternoon and snacks in the evening from the Salvation Army. Some say - best of all - it provides a sense of community.
"Keep the kids out of the street. I mean you can look around and see the kids are having a good time and so am I, and the parents as well. We are all out here," Danville Resident Debra Scott said.
The Fun Wagon comes at no cost to residents.
You can call Danville Parks and Rec at 434-799-5200 to find out where the Fun Wagon will be next.

Danville council to consider incentives for supercomputer project ...
Three new budget appropriation items will get a first look from Danville City Council during its meeting Tuesday.
The City Council members will review the economic development package prepared for the Noblis project, which includes bringing a Cray supercomputer to Danville — the first such computer installed outside of a federal laboratory or a research university setting.
The Tobacco Commission has approved two grants totaling $3 million to purchase the $5 million computer, which will be co-owned by the city and Noblis. Cray is writing down the cost by $2 million to “make the project work,” according to a summary of the project from Jeremy Stratton, director of economic development.
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership approved a $1 million Governor’s Opportunity Fund grant to renovate the Old Belt One building on Bridge Street, and the city is offering a cash grant package of $675,000, paid out over a 36-month period.
Noblis will also invest $1.5 million in the project and guarantee that the project will create 15 jobs with an average wage of $125,000.
Stratton said all of the entities involved in funding the project “feel strongly that this project will create a new cluster of technology companies and bring a new level of prestige to the community” by having the supercomputer located here.
The two other new items on the agenda are the approval of a Virginia Department of Aviation grant for $100,000 to help maintain Danville Regional Airport and a Library of Virginia grant totaling $20,283 to restore 10 of the Circuit Court’s oldest deed books.
All three of the new appropriations will come up for a final vote at the Aug. 2 meeting.
Agenda items that have had their first reading and are up for a final vote are:
• the appropriation of federal funds totaling $1.7 million for community development programs;
• the appropriation of a $55,000 state grant that will be used for training and equipment upgrades for the Danville Fire Department’s haz-mat teams;
• the appropriation of state and federal funds totaling $793,310 for upgrades to Danville Transit’s buses and downtown transfer station, as well as new automated scheduling software for the Handivan and Reserve-A-Ride programs; the city’s share in the projects is expected to total $57,398.
