Charlotte family claims third big lottery prize
RALEIGH – The McCauley family from Charlotte may rank among the luckiest in lottery history. On Monday, Kimberly McCauley walked into NCEL headquarters in Raleigh to claim the $100,000 prize she’d won in the new instant scratch-off game 10X the Money. When asked if she would like to take a souvenir photo with the oversized check, she laughed and looked to her mother Amy for advice. Her mother has been in this type of situation twice before.
Amy McCauley won $15.5 million in the New York Lotto game back in 1991 and just recently collected the final check from her 20-year annuity. In April 2007, she matched all five numbers on her Carolina Cash 5 ticket and won another top prize, this time $161,172. She also collected two $1,000 prizes in 2009 playing the NCEL’s $130 Million Blockbuster game.
“I never thought I’d win anything,” said Kimberly as she collected her prize. “I figured my mom was hogging all the luck. This is so overwhelming, but it’s a good kind of overwhelming.” Kimberly said she called her mother when she realized she had won, but at the time thought she’d only won $10,000. As she continued to scratch the ticket while on the phone, she said she felt elated to realize she’d won the top prize. Kimberly said she may use her winnings, worth $68,001 after taxes, to pay off her student loans and purchase a Mini Cooper. She purchased her winning ticket at the Texaco Foodmart on Central Avenue in Charlotte. 10X the Money launched on July 5 with six $100,000 top prizes. As of Thursday afternoon, five top prizes remain to be claimed.
William Garner, an information technology student from Greensboro, plans to give his mother anything she wants after winning $1 million playing Powerball. His $2 Power Play ticket from the July 16 drawing matched all five white balls but not the Power Ball. Garner learned of his win on Tuesday morning when he looked up the numbers on the internet, but didn’t realize how much he’d won until he validated his ticket at the local claims center.
“I thought I’d won $200,000,” Garner said. “The lady at the claims center played with me a little bit, but finally told me I’d won the million. Funny thing is, my family was talking about the lottery during Sunday dinner, and the whole time I didn’t even know I was a winner. It still isn’t real to me yet.” Garner also plans to use his winnings, worth $680,015 after taxes, to purchase a new car and move out of his apartment. The ticket was sold at the Great Stops on West Market Street in Greensboro.
