Mac OS X Lion 10.7 Hands on Review
For many of us, the iPhone and the iPad have almost become appendages, so when I saw some of the many iOS like features in a preview of Mac OS X Lion (Lion), I nodded in agreement and I couldn’t wait for the opportunity to take it for a test drive. But before I did, I thought it would be a good idea to run Disk Utility and backup my computer, just in case. I also checked Software Update to ensure everything I had was current. To run Lion, your Mac needs to have at least an Intel Core 2 Duo, or Core i3, i5 or i7 series or Xeon processor, with 2GB RAM to run. So first-generation MacBooks or MacBook Pro models with early Intel single core processors are out of luck.
The upgrade process was simple and seamless. All I had to do was select the App Store under the Apple menu (or from my dock), sign in with my Apple user id, purchase and proceed to download the upgrade.
It’s a hefty 3.74 GB download, which took roughly 90 min to complete and made my other device’s connection almost ground to a halt. Of course, your results may vary with your connection.
From there, it took about 45 minutes to complete the install; I’m pleased to say without any issue. After launching the Setup Assistant and asking me to register, it was ready to roll. It was that simple.
Multi-Touch Gestures & Scrolling in Lion
Interestingly enough, “Scrolling in Lion” was the first window to pop up, with guidance on of couple the new gestures found in this release. While scrolling isn’t new, I quickly discovered the scrolling gesture functioned as it would on an iPad, ie: scrolling up moved the page and the scroll bars down, totally opposite as it did on a Mac before the install.
This actually threw me for a loop; being so used to it my Mac for so long. Try it, you’ll see. You can of course change this in the Track Pad settings.
And speaking of scroll bars, in OS X Lion, they only actually appear when you scroll.
We’ll touch upon some of the other gestures as we take a look at just a few of the 250+ features in the new release.
Launchpad
Launchpad is a full screen homepage for your Mac’s apps, virtually identical to that found on the iPad, where you can quickly find, access and launch your apps. Even purchases appear on these pages. A 2-finger swipe left or right will take you to the next page.

So at first, I thought it to be redundant, but I'm an app junkie and I can't fit every app in the dock, even if I make the icons teeny-weeny. So in hindsight, rather than having to navigate to my Applications folder, Launchpad gets them in sight almost

They also sport the app icons which can be slid over to unlock the device and directly jump into that app. The long overdue overhaul of notifications is definitely one of iOS 5's biggest triumphs, and brings Apple's fleet of touchscreen gadgets in line
